As one participant remarked at the SBL session where I intro-
duced the program, it essentially amounts to a Masoretic spell
checker (although, naturally, what it is checking is the ac-
centuation only).
I envision this tool as being useful for anyone who is working
on Tiberian-pointed MSS, on future Biblia Hebraica editions, & on
the structure of the Tiberian cantillation system in general.
All that is needed to adapt it to new texts is to rewrite the
lexical analysis module to recognize the codes used for that
text. Naturally, we are talking about texts that have been scan-
ned, and are in machine-readable form.
Note that this package comes in source format only. It is not
an executable. The lexical analyzer is written in Lex, and the
parser code is in YACC. Well-schooled C programmers should have
no trouble adapting the system to their particular needs. Al-
though the software has some minor limitations, it still puts
nearly error-free accentual typography well within our grasp.
As obstinate as they might seem, computers are working a slow and
steady revolution in our field.
